Ged Ryan talks to Glass and Glazing Products magazine about the increased risk to property now that Autumn is upon us.

As the nights draw in and winter approaches, we see Police Forces round the country begin their Autumn/Winter anti-burglary campaigns in order to raise awareness of the increased risk to homes and property.  Sadly, as the evenings stay darker for longer, this often leads to an increase in burglaries.  Recent crime statistics from UKCrimeStats, covering England and Wales in the last four years, show that burglaries rise noticeably in the autumn months, up 10% in some places.  In fact, autumn sees even higher break-in stats than December, dispelling the assumption that Christmas time is the biggest threat to property.  And with it only taking a minute in some cases to gain access, a fundamental message across all forces is, ensure windows and doors are locked securely.  This doesn’t always stop a determined thief though, especially when a common first point of attack – the door hardware – is not up to scratch. Even if a door is secured, it does not always mean it is fully protected against intruder attack.  Often, quite quickly and without much effort, a door handle without any security protection can be compromised.

Enhanced security in your handle

We believe the enhanced security handle from HOPPE, to be amongst the most secure door handles on the market today.  With external back plates manufactured from solid aluminium extrusion, providing added strength and attack resistance, the security handle has also a sliding cylinder cover which helps protect against attack and is adjustable to suit various cylinder lengths.  The security handle incorporates some innovative and user friendly design features: HOPPE Quick-Fit technology which effectively clamps the inner and outer backplate together with the patented security fixing bolt system – as well as significantly improving fitting times compared with traditional grub screw installations; the specially designed profile edges on the outer backplate work together to ensure consistent PAS24:2012, Annex A pass results; and an added bonus is that it is designed with the same fixing positions as standard HOPPE door handles which makes it is suitable for retrofitting. It is also available to suit a variety of multipoint locks.  HOPPE security door handles have been successfully tested in accordance with the requirements of PAS24:2012, Annex A for hardware attack and include added protection of the cylinder against frontal attack.

Don’t just take our word for it

When it comes to security, professional product design also takes into account criminal psychology and of the 1 million burglaries and attempted burglaries every year in the UK*, a large percentage are committed by opportunist thieves who are successful because they gain access to the cylinder.  The visual deterrent offered by HOPPE’s door handles deliberately engineered-in protective furniture plays an important role in making opportunists think twice.  This, combined with features such as the patented security bolt and HOPPE Quick-Fit technology, ensures that HOPPE security door handles more than satisfies the needs of the homeowner.
